Let's start with the iPhone (and this works for the iPad, as well). Once Outlook is talking to Google Calendar, life is beautiful for the smartphone user. Sync two-way if you want calendar entries made in either place to flow back-and-forth. You can sync one-way, to send only stuff on your Outlook calendar to Google or vice-versa.

Google Calendar Sync is a lightweight program you install that automatically syncs whatever is on your Outlook calendar to your Google Calendar account (you'll need to create a Google Calendar account, if you don't already have one).

I dearly wish Google would support the Mac with this, and I'll revisit that wish at the end. Google Calendar Sync is the solution to all of these issues, at least if you use Windows.

If a user does not configure free/busy information to be shared, you cannot use Open Other User's Folder to view their free/busy information.I love Outlook. The Exchange Availability Service allows for access to be configured per user and to control how much free/busy information is shared. However, Exchange Server 2007 introduced the Availability Service.

The SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY folder is available to any authenticated user. This is because Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and earlier versions publish user free/busy information in the SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY dedicated public folder. When the shared mailbox is moved from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or newer, Outlook 2010 or later versions may no longer be able to view availability information by using Open Other User's Folder.
